A weather statement calling for heavy rain in Hamilton was cancelled but not before the city closed its fields and diamonds for the day.

The City of Hamilton parks department told The Spectator that sports fields and diamonds are closed because of the volume of rain that fell since Monday.

Hamilton's rainout policy states that to help reduce repairs and maintenance, fields will close when ponding and water sponging exist on fields or diamonds.

Environment Canada cancelled a special weather statement first issued Monday afternoon calling for up to 50 millimetres of rainfall in the Hamilton area.

The rain is expected to wrap up by Tuesday evening as a cold front moves into the area from the west, the National Weather Service said in a statement.

Tuesday's high is expected to reach 19 C and the sun may even make an appearance before the evening, according to the weather service website.

The Hamilton Conservation Authority is advising residents of potential watercourse flooding amid the forecast rainfall.

Its flood watch remains in effect until Thursday.
