SIU investigating Barton Street East crash

Ontario's police watchdog has been called in to investigate a crash in central Hamilton.

In a news release Sunday evening, Hamilton police said the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) had invoked their mandate after a collision occurred in the area of Barton Street East and Smith Avenue early Sunday morning.

Police have released no further details on the crash and have directed all questions to the SIU. The Spectator has reached out to the SIU for more information and is awaiting a response.

Barton Street East was closed in both directions between Emerald and St. Matthews avenues for several hours on Sunday.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police in Ontario where someone is seriously hurt or killed.
