Shots fired in downtown Hamilton marks fifth shooting in June
Hamilton police are investigating an overnight shooting in the downtown core - the latest in a trigger-happy June.
Police said in a release they responded to the area of John and King Williams streets around 2:30 a.m. Saturday for reports of possible shots fired.
Evidence at the scene confirmed a shooting occurred. No one was injured.
It marked the fifth shooting this month and third in the past six days.
Police were called to Roxborough and Grosvenor avenues shortly before 2 a.m. June 13 for reports of shots fired. No one was hurt. A 33-year-old Hamilton man was identified as the single suspect and later arrested. He faces a dozen charges, including multiple firearm offences.
A day earlier, on June 12, police responded to a shooting in the area of Hess and Market streets around 4:30 p.m. The incident, which happened under broad daylight, left two people with minor injuries. Police continue to investigate.
There were also a pair of shootings on June 3.
One occurred around 12:45 p.m. in the area of Dartmouth Gate and Galileo Drive. The brazen drive-by in a residential Stoney Creek neighbourhood saw a local man escape a stream of four bullets unscathed. Police charged a 17-year-old with several firearm-related charges a week later.
The second occurred around 11:40 p.m. in the area of Gibson Avenue and Wilson Street. Police confirmed a downtown shooting took place, but said there were no injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
There have been 16 shootings in Hamilton in 2022 - the vast majority of which, 12, resulted in no injuries.
Only one has ended with a person killed. Shane Grenier, 39, was fatally shot in the head and his body dumped from a black BMW on Tisdale Street South March 6. The investigation into his death remains ongoing.
Police ask anyone with information about Saturday's shooting in the downtown core to call Det. Const. Jason Henry at 905-546-3816.
