Woman in 60s critically injured in Concession Street fire
A woman in her 60s has been transported to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition after a fire at a four-storey apartment building on Concession Street Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were called to 805 Concession St., near East 33rd Street, shortly before 10:30 a.m. June 22. Firefighters were told on route that someone may still be inside.
The first crews on scene were met with heavy smoke conditions" in a basement unit, said Hamilton fire Chief Dave Cunliffe.
Firefighters entered the apartment, where the resident was quickly removed and transported to hospital.
Hamilton Paramedic Service Supt. Dave Thompson said one person was taken to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition."
The fire was quickly brought under control and no other injuries were reported. The apartment sustained approximately $200,000 in damages.
Hamilton police later determined the identity of the victim: a woman in her 60s.
Police are holding the scene and, due to the severity of injuries, the arson unit has carriage of the investigation, said Const. Indy Bharaj.
The Office of Fire Marshal has been called. It is not yet clear if it will attend the scene.
All other tenants have been allowed back into their apartments.
