Labour's victory in the Wakefield byelection is proof the party is ready for government", Keir Starmer has said.
The Tories lost the seat they had gained in 2019 for the first time in almost 90 years, trailing Labour by 4,921 votes and 18 percentage points. Simon Lightwood, an NHS communications executive who worked for the previous local Labour MP, was elected on a swing of 12.7% from the Tories.
