Man accused of setting woman on fire at Kipling Station charged with first-degree murder

A man accused of setting a woman on fire at Kipling Station last month was charged with first-degree murder on Monday, according to Toronto police.

The victim, identified by Toronto police in a release on Monday night as 28-year-old Nyima Dolma, succumbed to her injuries on July 5.

The alleged attack took place June 17, on a TTC bus at Kipling station. Officers arrived to find a woman on fire. She was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police arrested a man nearby, and further investigation revealed there was no relationship between the victim and her attacker," according to the statement released Monday night.

Tenzin Norbu, 33, was charged with one count of first-degree murder Monday. He appeared in court earlier that day via video link.

The homicide squad has taken over the investigation. A police spokesperson told the Star Monday that the incident could be" hate-motivated, but they are not ruling anything out at this point in time.

A GoFundMe page, since shuttered, has raised just over $39,000 as of July 7. An update on the page earlier this month notes that the family asks for privacy.
