King Street East remains closed as building collapse repairs continue
King Street East near Emerald Street and East Avenue North, near a partially collapsed building, remained closed Sunday afternoon, with the City of Hamilton revising its targeted reopening to later in the day.
The city said Saturday that crews were aiming to have the street reopened Sunday morning, but by 4 p.m. the road remained shuttered.
The facade of a building near King and East Avenue North crumbled Friday afternoon, spilling bricks onto the sidewalk and into the street.
In an email, the Hamilton Fire Department said there were no injuries reported. The fire department said it was working with the city's building department and Hamilton police on traffic and scene control. The cause of the collapse has not been disclosed.
The city missed its target of reopening the street Sunday morning, saying crews were still working on two buildings in the area. In a tweet, the city said that it was aiming to open the two south lanes of King Street by end of Sunday.
More to come.
