Hamilton confirms presence of toxic blue-green algae at Pier 4
The city has confirmed the presence of toxic blue-green algae at Pier 4, closing the beach there until further notice.
Due to the potential health risks, the city advises to avoid any contact with the water and not allow pets to swim in the areas where the blue-green algae is present.
Contact or ingestion of blue-green algae may cause skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting.
If you come in contact with the water, experts say to wash yourself off as soon as possible with clean water. Facilities for handwashing and rinsing off are available at Pier 4 Park beach.
The blue-green algae is expected to decrease as the weather cools down.
