With affordability front of mind, perusing thrift stores is a way to find gently used or preloved items at lower prices. Thrifting can also be a way to buy or donate second-hand items to reduce the perils of fast fashion.

Here are some thrift stores operating in Hamilton:

Plato's Closet

505 Rymal Rd. E.

Not only can you buy clothes, shoes, handbags and accessories here, Plato's Closet also purchases these items - gently used - from customers in all seasons throughout the year.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store

250 King St. E., 879 Upper James St., 2500 Barton St. E.

The Salvation Army operates three thrift stores in Hamilton, each of which carry a range of preloved items. And the stores offer a senior discount (10 per cent)

Value Village

530 Fennell Ave., 840 Queenston Rd. (Stoney Creek), 120 Portia Dr. (Ancaster)

Value Village sells and accepts donations for clothing, shoes, housewares, small appliances, small furniture, exercise goods, sporting goods, games, toys, electronics, books, media, backpacks, purses and bed and bath items.

Mission Thrift Store

33 King St. E. (Dundas), 601 Upper Gage Ave.

These two locations are part of a Canada-wide chain run by a Christian non-profit. The stores sell clothing and household items. Furniture, books, movies, toys, and many other preloved items are also on sale at their locations.

Drop n' Shop

37 Kilbride Rd.

This location is operated by Community Living Hamilton and its website states money from sales go back to that organization.

Talize

1400 Upper James St.

The Hamilton location offers designer fashions, accessories, leather goods, footwear, housewares, books and toys. Students and seniors get a 10 per cent discount. As an incentive for people to donate, Talize offers a $5 coupon - but check online to see what it will, and will not, accept as donations.

re-Source Thrift Shop

1050 Upper Gage Ave.

With one location in Hamilton, re-Source is a volunteer-run operation raising money in support of Christian education and various other local causes." Its fun finds" include housewares, clothing, sporting equipment, appliances and furniture.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore

285 Nash Rd. N.

This location offers both online shopping as well as in-store purchases. Its revenue helps fund Habitat Hamilton's administrative and operational costs.
