Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Corral sustained a Lisfranc foot injury that is likely season-ending, head coach Matt Rhule told reporters Saturday, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Corral appeared to suffer the injury after being stepped on during the Panthers' preseason game against the New England Patriots on Friday. He missed the final two series of the contest to undergo X-rays.

The rookie passer left the contest having completed nine of his 15 pass attempts for 58 yards in the Panthers' eventual 20-10 loss to the Patriots.

"I know Matt's a battler, so this year of development, he's going to have to grind, both taking care of his foot and all the things he needs to do as a quarterback," Rhule said, according to team reporter Darin Gantt. "Hopefully, someday, he'll look back and say it was a blessing, but I hate it for him right now."

The Ole Miss product wasn't expected to contribute immediately on offense, with the Panthers' passing depth chart featuring both Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. However, with Corral likely out for a significant amount of time, PJ Walker could serve as an insurance policy at the position in the regular season.

Corral was a third-round selection of the Panthers in the 2022 NFL Draft.
