One person is dead and another seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 403 near Ancaster.

Emergency crews responded to the on-ramp between the Lincoln Alexander Valley Parkway and Highway 403 around 6:20 p.m. on Monday for reports of a collision involving a trapped patient.

Supt. Dave Thompson of the Hamilton Paramedic Service said two people were initially taken to hospital with serious injuries.

As of 7:45 p.m., one victim - the passenger - had died, Aurora OPP said via Twitter. The driver remained in critical, life-threatening condition, police said.

A heavily damaged, silver sedan was wedged in between a mangled guardrail.

One lane on the eastbound 403 reopened around 1 a.m. Tuesday to traffic, the right lane remains closed for guardrail repairs.
