Tretter, a fourth-round pick in the 2013 draft, spent three years with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Browns as a free agent in 2017.

He then played the next five seasons in Cleveland, starting 80 games for an offensive line that had emerged as one of the NFL's premier units.

Tretter was elected as president of the NFL Players' Association for the first time in 2020, succeeding longtime union leader Eric Winston. He was re-elected to the position in March 2022.
