Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. is in stable condition after being shot multiple times as the victim in an apparent carjacking attempt, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"We have been made aware that Brian Robinson Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington, D.C.," the Commanders said in a statement. "He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital, where team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian's privacy at this time. "

The 23-year-old was struck in the glute and lower leg, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said Monday that doctors are optimistic about Robinson's recovery and potential return this season, according to John Keim of ESPN.

Rivera also released a statement after visiting Robinson in the hospital.

I just got done visiting w/Brian. He is in good spirits and wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers & support. He wants his teammates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all & will be back soon doing what he does best.

The incident took place shortly before 6 p.m. in D.C., local police communications director Dustin Sternbeck confirmed in a statement obtained by ESPN's John Keim.

A firearm was recovered from the scene and police have identified two possible assailants.

Robinson "was able to wrestle a firearm away" from one of the two men attempting to rob him before the other suspect shot him twice, D.C. police said Monday, according to Nicki Jhabvala and Emily Davies of The Washington Post.

The rookie was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft this past spring. Robinson rushed for 2,704 yards and 29 touchdowns during his collegiate tenure at Alabama.
