United States superstar Hilary Knight made history at the women's world championship on Thursday, surpassing Canadian icon Hayley Wickenheiser for the most points in tournament history with 87.

Knight accomplished the feat with a goal in the third period of USA's 12-1 quarterfinal rout of Hungary. She looked to have broken the record in the middle frame, but one of her two assists was later taken away.

"You just start with a dream, and you want to represent your country on the world stage and be a part of that room," Knight told TSN postgame. "It's just an honor to be here."

"It's wild," Knight said of passing Wickenheiser and others atop the list. "You grow up seeing them on TV at the Olympics and stuff, and then you get to play against them for a couple years, and then all of the sudden, they're not around, and you're kind of the only one left."

Knight, 33, first appeared at the world championship in 2006-07. She's suited up at the event 11 times, capturing a remarkable eight gold medals along with three silvers while leading the event in scoring on four separate occasions.

She's also won one gold and three silvers with the U.S. on the Olympic stage.

Knight and the American squad will face Czechia in one semifinal, with Canada and Switzerland meeting in the other. The Canadians booked their spot in the final four with a 3-0 win over Sweden.

The United States remained undefeated at this year's tournament with Thursday's emphatic victory.
