Toney not concerned about lack of snaps, happy Giants won opener
New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney isn't upset that he wasn't much of a factor in his team's 21-20 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 1.
"Disappointed in victory? Disappointed in a victory?" he said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "That sounds crazy."
The second-year wideout played just seven snaps on offense last Sunday. He finished the game with 23 rushing yards on two carries.
Toney said he's unsure why he didn't see a larger role but plans to work hard for when his number is called.
"I get paid to play, not coach," he said. "At the end of the day, I have to prepare as if I was going and playing every play."
The Giants didn't focus on Toney despite losing receiver Wan'Dale Robinson to a knee injury in the second quarter.
Head coach Brian Daboll said Toney was part of several specific packages that New York didn't get to in the game.
Toney joined the Giants with heightened expectations after being selected 20th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. He racked up 420 receiving yards in his rookie campaign but has yet to score a touchdown.
Toney will have to prove he deserves a longer look on the field behind a receiving corps that features Kenny Golladay, Sterling Shepard, and Richie James.
Numerous injuries marred Toney's 2021 season, including testing positive for COVID-19 twice and leaving practice after wearing the wrong-sized cleats. Knee surgery this past spring knocked the Florida product out of offseason workouts. A hamstring injury also forced him to miss time during training camp.
