Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks is optimistic Baker Mayfield could act as P.J. Walker's backup at quarterback Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams despite a high ankle injury, according to Steve Reed of The Associated Press.

Mayfield was reportedly expected to miss multiple weeks. However, Wilks said an MRI would determine his status for Week 6. Mayfield was officially listed as doubtful.

The veteran suffered the injury in the first half of last Sunday's loss to San Francisco after a 49ers player landed on his leg.

Mayfield has struggled in his first season in Carolina, throwing for 962 yards and four touchdowns against four interceptions during a 1-4 start.

Panthers cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Jaycee Horn were both listed as questionable due to ankle and rib injuries, respectively. Wilks indicated Jackson will play but Horn will miss the game.

Carolina fired head coach Matt Rhule on Monday and named Wilks its interim coach for the remainder of the season.
