The three-week siege of Yorktown ended on October 17 when British General Cornwallis, unable to escape by sea because of the French fleet, surrendered.

But it might have ended much differently if not for a French admiral's eleventh hour effort to get George Washington's disgruntled troops sound money instead of depreciated, fiat-paper money.
