Commanders' Wentz fine with backup role: 'Part of the business'
Quarterback Carson Wentz is back practicing with the Washington Commanders and has accepted his role as Taylor Heinicke's backup.
"I get it. It's part of the business," Wentz said, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.
Wentz fractured a finger in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears. He was able to finish the game but underwent surgery a few days later and was placed on injured reserve Oct. 22.
The 29-year-old said his finger is feeling good, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports. Wentz was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday.
The Commanders now have 21 days to activate him or he'll be placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. Head coach Ron Rivera said Sam Howell will be Heinicke's backup Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
Heinicke has impressed since taking over as the starting quarterback in Week 7, leading the team to a 4-1 record.
"As a competitor, you want to be out there ... But at the same time, I have a great relationship with Taylor and all the guys ... and I'm going to do what I can to help and support him," Wentz added, per Jhabvala.
The Commanders acquired Wentz in March to be their starting quarterback. He is 2-4 in six starts, throwing for 1,489 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He's under contract through the 2024 season.
