Hamilton police are investigating an early morning shooting at a home in central Hamilton - marking the third incident of gunfire in the city in less than a week.

In a press release, police said officers were called to the area of Campbell Avenue and Grosvenor Avenue North just before 3 a.m. Friday for reports of shots fired at a house.

On scene, officers confirmed a shooting had occurred. There were people home at the time, but no one was injured, police said.

The incident is believed to be targeted, according to police. There is no information on suspects.

This marks at least the 39th shooting reported to police in Hamilton this year. Thirteen people have been shot - three of which were homicide victims.

The shooting comes within days of two other shootings involving homes in the lower city.

Late Wednesday night, a home on Minto Avenue at Bristol Street was targeted by gunfire, while early Tuesday morning, shots were fired at a home on Cannon Street East at Balmoral Avenue North.

No one was hurt in either incident.

Hamilton police have also reported an increase in the number of guns they are seizing, including many being seized by officers during traffic stops.

Police said they are often charging the same people repeatedly. Last year, 16 per cent of people charged by Hamilton police with gun crimes faced previous, similar charges.

Investigators are asking residents in the Crown Point East neighbourhood to review security footage between the hours of 2 and 4 a.m. for any suspicious activity.

Those with information are asked to contact Det. Sgt. Candace Culp at 905-546-2907 or the Division 2 staff sergeant at 905-546-2963.
