The Penguins went on to win the game in overtime. The two clubs play in the second leg of a home-and-home Saturday night in Pittsburgh.
Skinner is in the midst of a strong season, ranking second on the high-flying Sabres with 32 points in 27 games. He's been particularly strong of late, registering eight goals and 10 assists in his last nine appearances.
The 30-year-old has one prior suspension in his 13-season career. Skinner was banned two games in 2012 as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes for kicking an opponent.
