Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Monday he doesn't expect quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to play in Sunday's must-win game against the New York Jets, according to ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques.

McDaniel added that they are preparing to start Teddy Bridgewater or rookie Skylar Thompson under center in Week 18.

Tagovailoa missed Sunday's 23-21 loss to the New England Patriots due to a concussion. The 24-year-old has been in concussion protocol twice this season. His first placement in the protocol came in a Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and kept him sidelined for two games.

Bridgewater started Miami's Week 17 matchup versus New England but left the game with a finger injury. He passed for 161 yards, one touchdown, and one interception before exiting. Thompson replaced Bridgewater, finishing the day with 12 completions on 21 attempts for 104 yards, one touchdown, and one pick.

McDaniel said Monday that he believes Bridgewater's right pinky is dislocated but not broken, according to Louis-Jacques. Injuries have been an issue for Miami lately, as the team also faced New England without pass-rusher Bradley Chubb, offensive tackle Terron Armstead, and cornerback Xavien Howard.

The Dolphins have lost five in a row to drop to 8-8 this season. Miami will claim one of the AFC wild-card spots with a win over the Jets and a Patriots loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 18.
