Oakville resident charged with arson by negligence following highrise fire
Charges have been laid in connection with a Friday, Dec. 30 fire at an Oakville apartment unit.
The Oakville Fire Department and Halton police were called to 205 Queen Mary Dr. shortly after 9 a.m. for reports of a fire within one of the highrise's units.
That fire was extinguished, but not before causing around $150,000 worth of damage, police said.
No one was injured.
Halton Police Media Relations officer Steve Elms said the occupant of the unit had previously been warned about the unit being kept in a manner which constituted a fire hazard.
Oakville Deputy Fire Chief Kalpana Rajgopalan said fire crews who worked to extinguish the fire in the unit were met with conditions that were consistent with hoarding."
A 59-year-old Oakville man was arrested the same day of the fire near Trafalgar Park Community Centre. He was charged with arson by negligence and failing to comply with probation.
The charges have not been proven in court.
