Sources: Cardinals won't retain Keim as GM, could give him lesser role

The Arizona Cardinals won't bring back Steve Keim, who is on a health-related absence, as general manager but could give him a lesser role upon his return, sources told Jordan Schultz, theScore's NFL insider.

The Cardinals announced Keim was stepping away indefinitely on Dec. 14 but didn't elaborate. The 50-year-old has been with the NFC West club since 1999 and was promoted to general manager in 2013. He leaves his current role with an 80-76-2 record and three postseason appearances.

Arizona also fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury, sources told Jordan Schultz, theScore's NFL insider. Kingsbury went 28-37-1 in four seasons with the Cardinals. They've reportedly begun vetting potential candidates for the vacant job, including former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Vice president of player personnel Quentin Harris and vice president of pro scouting Adrian Wilson have led Arizona's front office in Keim's absence. Owner Michael Bidwill is strongly considering promoting both of them to form a co-GM setup, reports Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Arizona gave contract extensions through 2027 to Keim and Kingsbury in March following a playoff appearance in 2021.

However, the Cardinals have endured a disappointing season, finishing at the bottom of the NFC West with a 4-13 record. Quarterback Kyler Murray was lost for the season after suffering a torn ACL and meniscus on Dec. 12.
