At the beginning of the year, we kicked off the latest edition of our annual public domain game jam, Gaming Like It's 1927! Last night, the jam came to a close, with a few submissions sneaking in right before the deadline and bringing us to a total of 20 entries this year. We've only just begun digging into the many games that were submitted, but we can already tell it's a great lineup. There are entries from plenty of new designers as well as returning winners who created incredible games in past years, and games drawing on all kinds of newly public domain works ranging from big names like the film Metropolis to truly obscure deep cuts, like a 1927 article on homing pigeons from an ornithology magazine. You can (and should!) check out all the submissions over on Itch.

Over the next little while, we'll be checking out all the games and making our selections for the winners in all six categories, and it's clearly going to be a difficult decision with so many great entries. In the mean time, a huge thank you to all the designers who participated this year! As usual, we're blown away by the creativity and skill on display. The purpose of this game jam has always been to demonstrate something we've long believed and championed here at Techdirt - that a robust and growing public domain benefits us all by fueling new creation that enriches and expands our cultural landscape - and once again, you've helped us show how true that is.

Stay tuned for an announcement of the winners in the coming weeks, and in the mean time go play the games for yourself. And for those of you out there who have thought about participating in the jam but haven't done so yet, whether you're an experienced designer or just someone who'd like to give it a shot, it's never too early to start thinking about next year when a whole new slate of works will enter the public domain (hint: there's a big one on the list) and we'll be hosting Gaming Like It's 1928!
