Former NFL signal-caller Josh McCown is joining the Carolina Panthers as the team's quarterback coach, the club announced Friday.

The Panthers also hired Dom Capers as a senior defensive assistant. Capers was the franchise's first head coach, patrolling Carolina's sidelines from 1995-98.

McCown interviewed for the Houston Texans' head coach vacancy last offseason before the team hired Lovie Smith. The 40-year-old didn't receive any head coach interest this offseason.

Carolina started Baker Mayfield, PJ Walker, and Sam Darnold at quarterback last campaign, but none of the three are under contract entering the 2023 season.

The only quarterbacks the Panthers have signed for the next campaign are 2022 third-round pick Matt Corral, who missed his entire rookie season with a Lisfranc injury, and Jacob Eason.

McCown played for nine franchises over his 19-year NFL career, including two campaigns with the Panthers.
