Man has life-threatening injuries after shooting by Toronto police officer near Black Creek and Trethewey
A man has life-threatening injuries after he was shot by a Toronto police officer following reports he was brandishing a knife at a park in North York.
The shooting happened it the northeast corner of Black Creek Drive and Trethewey Drive, at around 8 a.m. on Monday.
According to the Special Investigations Unit, Ontario's police watchdog, officers were initially responding to a report of a man with a knife threatening a man walking a dog.
Following an interaction between the responding officers and the man, two officers first fired their Tasers before one officer shot the man, the SIU said.
The SIU, which investigates incidents of serious injury involving Ontario police, reported the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Paramedics told the Star his injuries were life-threatening.
At the scene Monday, half a dozen police cars blocked the off sections of Trethewey Drive, just steps from Toronto police 12 Division station. Crime scene tape cordoned off a nearby green space, including a small parking lot and playground.
By late morning, a Toronto police and SIU forensics van had arrived on scene and SIU investigators could be seen surveying the area.
Duty Inspector Suzanne Redman said that while police cannot comment any further, they are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Redman noted that only individual was injured in the interaction.
The SIU is set to hold a news conference on Monday.
This is a developing story.
