Seeing the aurora borealis so far south is highly unusual, and was thanks to very clear skies

The northern lights are usually most visible near the Earth's magnetic north and south poles, but thanks to clear skies across the UK over the past two nights, the light spectacle has reached as far south as Cornwall and Hertfordshire.
