Hamilton Spectator journalists up for three National Newspaper Awards
Hamilton Spectator journalists are in the running for three National Newspaper Awards.
Sebastian Bron, Steve Buist, Susan Clairmont and Katrina Clark are among 87 finalists from across Canada for work done in 2022.
This is a great honour for the nominees and the entire Spectator team. Perseverance, sensitivity, and a desire to share important information through effective storytelling are hallmarks of good journalism. That's what we try to bring to readers every day," said editor-in-chief Paul Berton.
Clairmont's wrenching feature on the tragic suicide of 12-year-old Grace McSweeney after years of bullying was nominated for the William Southam Award for Long Feature.
Buist, who retired last year, is a finalist alongside the Toronto Star's Rachel Mendleson for the John Honderich Award for Project of the Year. Their Unchartered" investigation looked into how police forces in Canada were violating fundamental rights with alarming frequency.
Bron and Clarke, now a reporter at the Winnipeg Free Press, are finalists in the Sustained News Coverage category for a series of stories that examined a privacy breach at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.
In all, the judges considered 923 entries from 76 news organizations. The Globe and Mail led nominations with 19.
The winners will be announced during a gala at The Design Exchange in Toronto on May 5.
