Modified elevator for Mossberg 590?

So I've been thinking, Mossberg makes the 590S that can shoot short shells, but the standard 590 can't shoot them without an insert. And even with the insert, you need to remove it to be able to use 2 1/2 inch shells. Looking at the elevator and the bolt, it looks like there is a channel that the elevator falls into when the bolt is closed (circled in red).

So here's my idea: would it be possible to replace the elevator with one that has an extended bar to be able to accommodate short shells? No other part of the action needs to be modified. Thoughts?
