Hamilton remembers workers killed or injured on the job

Workers from across the city, including striking workers from Canada's biggest federal public service union, gathered at city hall Friday at 11 a.m. to remember those killed or injured on the job on the National Day of Mourning.

Gina Degner, president of the Union of Taxation Employees Local 00014, and Catherine Majore, vice-president of the union local, placed a wreath at the base of the monument at the corner of Main and Bay streets before the crowd grew still for a moment of silence.

The National Day of Mourning, recognized each year on April 28, began in 1991. In 2021, there were 1,081 workplace fatalities recorded in Canada. As Canadians pause to remember, they are asked to renew their commitment to improving workplace safety.
