Several scrap vehicles were destroyed and a backyard garage damaged in a multiple-alarm fire in the yard of a Parkdale Avenue North business overnight.

Hamilton fire responded shortly after 2 a.m. for reports of fire behind homes on Mahony Avenue, said Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Steve Welton. On scene, firefighters discovered several scrap vehicles and trucks on fire in the yard of an auto parts business at 401 Parkdale Ave. N.

Given the size and layout of the area and heat from the fire, the fire department upgraded the alarm and called in additional resources.

A fence and garage also caught fire at a neighbouring home on Mahony, due to exposure to the extreme heat and fire in the vehicle yard," Welton said.

Firefighters worked quickly to control and extinguish the blaze, preventing it from spreading to any other properties.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Damages are estimated between $150,000 and $200,000.
