Stepping through doors of The Coop Wicked Chicken, one experiences the bodacious and totally tubular wonderment of the decades when the DeLorean was king of cars and people were warned not to go chasing waterfalls.

The idea was to start something that was more fun," said Clark Lishman, brand leader at The Coop, where they strive to serve guests with great food with an edgier atmosphere. The idea was to bring back nostalgia, start conversations."

The tasty as cluck" henhouse wanted to broaden the spectrum with pop culture elements of the last 40 years, which guests will find plastered or graffitied on the walls. There are also arcade games in various corners and even board games on the shelves.

That's what it kind of morphed into. Instead of just being my basement when I was a kid and a teen, we wanted somewhere to go where you could have fun, still, great food was the staple," he said. That's the easiest part for us."

The Waterdown restaurant's menu offers hungry patrons fresh and flavourful options ranging from poutine to tacos, sandwiches and burgers - yes, burgers - with names like Dirty Bird," Livin' on the Veg," and Totally Awesome." Visitors will have just as much fun ordering as their tastebuds will have eating.

Food's number 1, it's never frozen, always fresh," said Lishman.

The ambience and atmosphere at The Coop is just as important as the food and its quality.

I wanted everyone to have a moment of nostalgia but also be able to do something and not just eat," said Lishman of the addition of arcade and board games.

As for the younger patrons who colour and draw on everything? Keep on making a colourful splash.

Let's do more of that, more mess, more fun," he said.

After the restaurant first opened in 2017, it faced a minor controversy over the use of cocky language. When it first started, it was very in your face," said Lishman. I've definitely rolled back the whole innuendo part of the band."

But it's still there.

It needs to be cheeky," he said. It's still there, and I still like it and I still use it."

However, today, the language at the Waterdown location has been toned down.

I don't want to offend people. That was never the goal. I wanted to make you laugh, not piss you off."
