Ancaster goes medieval

Knights, squires, fairies and fair maidens wandered the grounds during the Wentworth Medieval Faire on Saturday and Sunday at the Ancaster Fairgrounds.

Attendees cosplayed in their own period pieces while strolling the vendors offering apparel, books, pipes, leather crafts and armour. There was humour by a troupe of performers with audience participation, an aerialist, dancers and a demonstration of falconry.

The featured event was knights on horseback participating in squire games. A brave squire wore a helmet on top of which a watermelon was placed, and the knights tried to cut closest to the helmet while galloping past.

The main event ended with the knights jousting using 11-foot lances made of Douglas fir. Points were awarded for striking an opponent or breaking a lance on an opponent, with top points for knocking an opponent from his horse.
