It was a busy morning at Grandad's Donuts on James Street North on Friday.

People had been lined up outside the popular doughnut shop since 6:30 a.m. awaiting the reopening of the locally owned and operated store at 7 a.m.

The shop - known for its doughnuts made fresh in-house - had been closed since March for renovations that saw the kitchen expanded and the store freshly painted in a vintage 1970s style.

Carly Grant, manager of the shop, said she expected 8,000 to 10,000 doughnuts to be purchased by eager customers Friday, which was appropriately National Doughnut Day.

CORRECTION: Grandad's expected to sell 8,000 to 10,000 donuts on reopening day, not have that many customers as reported.
