The City of Hamilton has closed the Dundurn stairs after an early morning crash on the west Mountain.

Cynthia Graham, manager of environmental services for the city, told The Spectator the stairs will be closed to the public until further notice" due to a vehicle collision that occurred on Friday morning.

Graham said the retaining wall near the top of the stairs, which connect the western part of the lower city to the Mountain, needs to be addressed prior to reopening."

A structural engineer is expected to assess the site on Monday, with the city hoping to determine the extent of the repairs required" at that time, added Graham.

The temporary closure marks the second set of escarpment steps to be closed to the public.

The upper portion of the Wentworth stairs is closed due to the Mountain Park Avenue reconstruction project, which began in late March. The section is set to reopen by October.

An alternative to the Dundurn stairs is the Chedoke stairs, which start outside the Chedoke Golf Club clubhouse and rise to Scenic Drive.
