A second victim in last weekend's shooting incident in St. Catharines has died, resulting in additional charges being laid against a suspect who remains in custody.

Niagara Regional Police said a 40-year-old woman died in hospital Thursday, succumbing to injuries she sustained in the shooting. A 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, after emergency crews responded to an apartment at 255 St. Paul St. West at about 9:35 p.m., Saturday.

Police said they will not identify the shooting victims at this time, at the request of the family.

As a result of the woman's death, suspect Donovan Williams now faces two charges of first degree murder, and failure to comply with an undertaking.

The 46-year-old Brampton resident remains in police custody and was scheduled to appear in court in St. Catharines Friday as a result of the new charge against him.

The woman's death is the fourth homicide in Niagara this year.

A 34-year-old man was found dead at the People's Choice Co-operative Housing on Louth Street on April 10, leading to the arrest of two suspects.

On Feb. 26, a 44-year-old Stoney Creek woman was charged with murder and attempted murder following a crash in Grimsby that police said was caused by one driver deliberately colliding into another vehicle. The incident claimed the life of an 82-year-old woman and injured a 79-year-old man.

Police investigated six homicides in 2022.
