Residential waste blaze causes significant smoke to cloud city’s east end
Emergency responders were busy Sunday morning knocking down a fire in the city's east end.
Hamilton fire was called to a residential waste transfer facility at 374 Gage Ave. N., near Gertrude Street and Burlington Street East, around 7 a.m. for reports of an industrial fire, according to a release.
Crews arrived to find a large volume of smoke and piles of residential waste fully involved.
The fire was quickly upgraded to a multiple alarm call after flames spread to a second building to the east, fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said in a release.
It took crews approximately two hours to get the fire under control. No injuries were reported.
Due to the significant amount of smoke, the Ministry of Environment was notified and residents in the area are advised to keep their windows closed, according to the release.
As the fire was deep seated in the piles of waste, firefighters are expected to remain on scene throughout the day.
Gage Avenue North will remain closed from Gertrude to Burlington streets.
