Linux for multi-os + bootloader

Hi all,

Have decided to go to a Linux distro that is simple, small, fast and supports legacy hardware such as Floppy Disk Drives, CD-R and DVD drives with USB2.0 or 1.1 connections.

I got a Dell laptop with 64bit Windows 11 Pro as a retirement pressie (better than a carriage clock) and have come upon an issue. Windows 11 has dropped support for those mass storage units that I have mentioned but continues support for mass storage memory sticks/thumb drives. To do this they have probably made changes to the kernel besides dropping the driver. They may have back filled Windows 10 with some of the Windows 11 kernel changes so it may not be sensible to get Windows 10.

So, when the Dell warranty runs out I want to partition the SSD to include other partitions. One for Linux, one for a bootloader, Two for Programs (1x Windows, 1x Linux) and x2 for Data.

The issue is that any loading can only be done direct from the internet site or by USB stick. Therefore I think I will need a self loading Linux which will perform the necessary further steps to configure the BIOS load sequence. BIOS, by the way is UEFI.

Can anyone recommend a Linux distro that will do what I need?

cheers,
