util-linux-2.39.1 breaks net connectivity
by oldpink from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6CMAN)
I don't now how many others have had this problem, but I discovered that the latest version of util-linux (version 2.39.1S) for Slackware-Current that has a build time stamp of June 28, 2023 16:02:24 makes it impossible for me to connect to the Net, at the very least via wifi, and possibly via wired connection.
There are probably other people who have discovered this problem, but I wanted to say that the solution was to the previous version of the same package, version 2.38.1.
Fortunately, I had done a full image backup only hours earlier, so I simply restored from that and brought the system right back up.
I then downloaded the previous version (I had to hunt around for a mirror that hadn't yet gotten the latest for Current) of util-linux to verify that this was the problem by putting the version 2.39.1 on, then trying to connect, finding that it failed.
Putting version 2.38.1 back on after that made it able to connect just fine.
I even went one further by building version 2.39.1 from source and installing it with upgradepkg, then trying again and that also failed.
I wanted to warn others about this problem, and my suggestion would be to stay with the last known good version and keep a local copy of the package of it for the next revision of util-linux in case the problem remains with that one.
