booting into new kernel with kexec (no reboot)?

I use Slackware64 15+current on desktop (and 15+stable on laptop) and always install the new kernels and would like to boot into one without rebooting, which I read you can do by installing kexec (which is on SlackBuilds.org) and doing the following.
Code:kexec -l /boot/vmlinuz --reuse-cmdline
kexec -eAll it ever seems to do is put my monitor in standby mode for a while, so I give up and press reboot... do I need to wait longer, or would need a different display/video/graphics card than an RX Radeon, or need to do something else? Recent Slackware Linux kernels already have kexec ability set.
