random segfault in video players

I had a gentoo system up and running fine, then after an upgrade there was a random segfault occurring on launch in the mpv & vlc media players. I tried installing the stock kernel to make sure it wasn't any of the kernel mods, but it was still happening. I even ran an upgrade for most of the vlc, ffmpeg, mpv use flags but it was not fixing the segfaults either. I installed a version of the funtoo and made sure the use flags and settings matched. The funtoo version has no segfaults, but there is still segfaults in the gentoo system. I ran fresh install on gentoo then and came up with the same issue again of the random segfaults lauching mpv/vlc, and there's like a 75% chance it will segfault when i try running it. I'm not sure what the issue is but it seems to be related to either the gfx driver or possibly something in the OS glibc? the thing is no other application is having that same issue and the desktop and other programs work fine.
