seeking wire ethernet between two laptops, one with wifi
by SaintDanBert from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6DBC8)
Can a someone help me or direct me to help for a LAN conx project?
How do I use wire ethernet from one laptop to another such that:
Certainly, this is not the first time this issue has happened in the history of Linux.
I believe that I need a special RJ-45 cable -- a "crossover" -- or some sort of adapter.
I believe that I need to configure the power laptop to use some sort of subnet for the wire adapter. QUESTION: Do I need DNS and DHCP services on the power laptop?
I believe that I need to configure the wire-only laptop for the subnet IP.
QUESTION: Can I pre-program fixed a IP address and avoid DHCP etc at the power laptop?
I believe that I must configure both laptops with ROUTE TABLE entries so that any and all network efforts succeed effectively and efficiently.
I have a modern, full-featured laptop with ability to use both wifi and wire ethernet. Most often it boots and launches wifi within my at-home, small office LAN. ASIDE: I would like this lash-up to become available and active any time the wire adapter wakes when wifi is already running.
Follow-up:
I probably need to create one or more scripts to accomplish all of the configuration on the power laptop. Then I likely need to create UDEV and UDISKs2 config to actually deal with launching the scripts
I have several other laptops that are wire only. These have legacy contents that I need to either recover or purge. Once that is done, I will find new uses or new homes for these older systems.
Thank you in advance,
