Very delayed network I/O console

After decades working with Linux, I still get novel odd surprises.

I have a relatively new Slackware 15.0 host. Console I/O works fine. When I had this computer connected to the office LAN ssh I/O also worked fine. Now I've connected it directly to an Internet IP and I'm sure I'm using the ISPs nameservers, netmask and gateway. Now, it may take over a minute to ssh to this computer and sometimes the connection times out.

Once connected, I have about 15 seconds to type something before visual feedback of the characters I'm typing stops. I can continue typing to complete the command, but I can see the character. After a minute +/- the complete command appears as well as the command output results; then I have another 10-15 seconds to type again; and so on. For continuous command like top or iftop the screen pauses for a minute or so, then all the visual output from the previous minute is dumped, it then works fine for 10-15 seconds, then back to the minute-ish pause.

It doesn't really disconnect during all this, just these long, no visual output pauses. htop shows virtually zero CPU or memory usage. iftop shows little network usage.

I have no idea where to start on this? Suggestions?
