Profile image upload fails

I tried to upload a photo of my own ugly mug, and each time it failed with a useless vague error message even though itis well within the limits described, 92 kB is below 97 kB and 200x200 is less than 400x400. I think it was a .png file; is it trying to tell me in a crap way that it only supports jpg even though it doesnit say that ?
