Github 2FA requirement - end of an era for small developers?
by Jason_25 from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6DXB8)
I was hit with a mandatory 2FA punishment from Github today. I knew their ignorant but well-meaning admins were pushing this for a while but did not think I would get caught up in the authoritarian login dragnet.
Ultimately we should expect no less evil from the likes of Microsoft. They have been a kind of benevolent benefactor until today. Now it is time to execute the final part of the plan. Can you guess it? Embrace, Extend, and now? Extinguish.
I thought it was fitting for this forum to be part of the beginning and end of my foray into Github. It was the good people here several years ago who encouraged me to share my work on Github and I am still grateful for that.
Will this spell the end of a lot of small open source development on Github or am I the only holdout? The work that I do is not important enough to need this. I would require an 80K+ dollar salary to put up with this. This seems like a shady way for Microsoft to take ownership of repositories that have locked the owners out. Additionally, I will not be commanded to have a certain smartphone with a certain software version and with a certain application on it. Furthermore, I will certainly not stick a random USB "security" device into any of my systems without a gun held to my head. Finally, I am not forced into 2FA for any other site than this one, including my bank.
How many times have we seen a loss of liberties due to it being for "the children" or for "the securities". This is straight out of the Microsoft playbook. This comes alongside "secure boot", UEFI, forced Windows account logins, Video and audio DRM, "Palladium", telemetry and other horrible anti-user initiatives like that.
I am thinking about moving to Sourceforge or expanding my self hosting. But either option is a large amount of work. It is easier to just give up as I am not getting anything back from the work that I do.
