seeking HOWTO create LVM with existing data disks

Q1. Can I create a Logical Volume (LVM) from partitions that already have data on them?
Q2. Are there new/improved alternatives to LVM?
Q3. Can you suggest "file catalog" applications for Linux?

I welcome comments and suggestions that address my question.
I appreciate comments and suggestions that take my efforts in alternative and useful directions.
However, please don't suggest anything that will make my efforts more difficult.

I have several physical drives i all with existing contents. My workstations all have drives with multiple partitions i all with existing contents. I know that I have data duplication and need to use 'fslint' or similar to clean things up. With the file scattering. A "file catalog" would also help with these efforts. As is, I find this near impossible.

I have routine {read "constant"} need to move files around so that I can change the sizes of a file system to hold either large files or large collections of related files.

Thank you in Advance,
