Broncos' Payton promises to get 'ship straightened' after blowout loss

Broncos head coach Sean Payton believes he has what it takes to get Denver pointed the right way after Sunday's historic 70-20 blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins.

"First off to the fans: We're going to work our tail off and get this ship straightened away," Payton said Monday. "That's going to happen. There's going to be a process involved in that. Certainly, there's a lot of work ahead of us."

The Dolphins put up an NFL-record 726 total yards Sunday and had a chance to break the league's single-game scoring record of 72 points in the fourth quarter but elected to kneel on fourth down rather than kick a field goal.

Payton said there'll be no changes to the coaching staff in response to the lopsided defeat. Denver is 0-3 to start the season.

"This is one of those weeks where you take a butt-whooping like that, you find out a lot about everyone," Payton explained. "It's a tough film to watch. I debated whether we were going to show it or not, but I think we'd be remiss if we didn't.

"We've got to sit in here, and today - as unpleasant as it's going to be - we have to get these things cleaned up. We played a good offense, but we certainly didn't help ourselves in any way, shape or form in playing them."

He credited the special teams unit for playing well but criticized the offense's three turnovers and the defense's inability to set the edge.

Denver and Cincinnati are the only two winless teams remaining in the AFC, though the Bengals play Monday night.
