Trying to boot Ubuntu from a USB (on an old machine)

I intend to run Ubuntu off a flash drive, so I installed ubuntu-22.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso on a 32 GB Sandisk flash drive using balenaEtcher. That seemed to go fine.
.
I set up my IBM thinkpad T60 that uses Windows XP professional to boot from a USB.
.
I restarted the laptop with the USB and first came upon a black screen with the following...
.
Try or Install Ubuntu
Ubuntu (safe graphics)
OEM Install (for Manufacturers)
Test Memory
.
At the very top of the screen is says, "GNU GRUB version 2.06"
.
When select "try Ubuntu", I get a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top left and I am locked. I have not been able to find anything online that addresses and fixes this particular issue. I tried re-writing the disk, but it comes up like this every time. I appreciate any help I can get. Thank you very much!
