In other words, it indicates that naive" should be pronounced nai-eve" and not nive." My question is then, why isn't cooperate" not spelled cooperate" indicating that it shouldn't be pronounced coop-er-ate." Why not bookcase" (I don't know how to do an HTML dieresis c.) Yeah, I know, you can get away with just typing naive" and most people will read it just fine, but it always looks like a typo of native" to me. It often works grammatically too. She was a very native girl, and didn't know much about the modern world." Etc.
