Vikings' Akers done for season with torn Achilles

Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers tore his left Achilles tendon in the team's 31-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed Monday.

The 5-foot-10 tailback tore his right Achilles tendon in 2021 as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.

Akers joined the Vikings in September via trade after spending the first three seasons and three games of his career with the Rams.

The 24-year-old rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns this season. 138 of those yards and one of the touchdowns came in his six games with the Vikings.

Minnesota has leaned on Alexander Mattison as its lead back with Akers playing a backup role this campaign. The club released longtime starter Dalvin Cook in the offseason, and he later signed with the New York Jets.

Ty Chandler, who has just eight carries for 42 yards this year, could step into an increased role with Akers' injury. The only other running back on the active roster is Kene Nwangwu, who has yet to take an offensive snap this year.
